Yesterday, I spent half the day getting my wardrobe ready for spring/summer. I knew I had to start sorting out the winter stuff before I could bring out my summer clothes stored from last season.
I always love doing this because it feels a little bit like Christmas, opening the bags of stored clothes to see what I have. If it's been a long summer or winter, you tend to forget what you have and it's a nice little surprise to see all the goodies.
You have to have a bit of energy to tackle this process though and a strong resolve to get rid of the stuff that doesn't work anymore to make room for the stuff that does.
Firstly, I go through the winter clothes and make three piles. One pile to be donated, one "MAYBE" pile and the other pile to keep..
The hardest pile is the "MAYBE'' pile. Be honest with yourself and if you can't be strong, get someone to help you. If it's looking old, doesn't fit right , the colour or shape does nothing for you and you haven't worn it all season, than donate it. Especially if the item wasn't too expensive. Just let it go.
Sometimes if you love a piece and it was expensive, maybe look at getting it altered by a dressmaker.
I recently had a bow remove from an on trend monochrome dress to make it not so girly, a "Lovers" skirt hem shortened and waist brought in and a white top/dress shorten to look more boxy. I also raided my daughters closet and got three 'mullet dresses' shortened and voila!!! A new look.
Once you have done this with the winter pile, store and do the same thing with the summer pieces. While you are at it, don't forget to make a list of the items that your wardrobe is missing; a pair of white shoes, a white bag, a maxi dress?
Lists will stop you impulse buying and help fill in the gaps in your wardrobe so you don't end up saying" I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR"
I have vowed not to buy any more dresses and focus instead on great pants and tops for this summer plus some gorgeous colour heels and flats.
If it is all too much for you and you don't know where to start, as a stylist, that is where I come in. I can work with you to make the process less painful and faster and also make sure you are keeping and adding the right things to your wardrobe to make you look your absolute best. I can also take you shopping to find the pieces for a fraction of the cost you might've spent on items you really don't need or do nothing for you.
So here's to a whole new season and an organized wardrobe. Best of luck everyone and have fun!!!
