The winter racing carnivals all over Australia are in full swing. And don't we see some very inappropriate race wear at these events. People seemed to have forgotten that it's a race meeting not a cocktail function or clubbing night. I love people wearing what they like but there are certain rules to proper race wear, especially if you are thinking of entering "Fashions on the Field"
Girls, here is a lowdown of the must have items and style tips for Winter racing carnivals
Lets start at the top and work our way down:
Hat or Fascinator is a must. Please not truckers caps even if they do have sequins or glitter. Choose one that will compliment your outfit and your face. Bigger is not always better.
Cover up shoulders and arms or you won't get a look in "Fashions of the Field." If you have short sleeves, wearing a cape or faux fur shrug is very popular at the moment. As long as the arms are covered. Your outfit should have a winter feel about it.
Gloves for your dainty hands just finish of your outfit. If living in a warmer climate, go for lighter options like lace but hands do have to be covered plus what other time of the year can you play ladies and don the gloves. It's fun
Dress or skirt length. Ok....., you might have AMAZING legs but keep the body con super short dress for the nightclub. We are trying to play ladies here, so on the knee or about 2 to 3 inches above the knee is a good look. If you have a very full skirt and are younger, you can usually go shorter.
Shoes need to be closed in pumps or peep-toes. Please no party sandals
Stockings. Yes, stockings are a must to finish off and pull in your whole look. Legs look amazing in the new sheer look hosiery and give you the extra advantage of pulling you in the middle so you don't need to go for the control undies if wearing something tighter.
Your little clutch or bag should be big enough to hold essentials like lipstick, money, powder and little fold up slippers for the end of the day when your feet are killing you. On no accounts do you discard shoes and walk around barefoot. Totally not cool.
Please keep your glittering ballgowns, satiny body con dresses at home and wear shoes you are going to be able to stand in for 5 hours plus on the grass. You have to walk well as well as look amazing. Sacrifice height for style.
Regardless of "the Rules" have a great time and enjoy playing dress ups and watching the gee gees run around the track and avoid at all costs being photographed in your local newspaper after having had to many drinks and lying on the grass dreaming of where you left your shoes.
